Description
Jack Kirby and Vince Colletta Thor #154 Cover Original Art (Marvel, 1968). Mangog, the "sum total of the hatred of a billion billion beings," makes his first appearance here, on this densely-packed cover illustration by Jack "King" Kirby. While any Silver Age Marvel cover by Kirby is worth celebrating, this one is a cut above the rest, if for no other reason than the amount of incredible detail Kirby and his able inker, Vince Colletta, poured into it. If you remember the original printed cover, you'll notice that the figure of Thor is a bit larger than on this artwork; that change was made by adding a photostat of the figure, sized a slight bit larger and glued in place. That stat has since fallen off, revealing Kirby's original version. The change resulted in some extra white-out around the stat, and a small amount of staining from the glue, but these are really minor concerns. The masthead logo and type elements are all original, hand-touched photostats, as used in original production; they're beginning to come loose, but are all still there.We feel this is one of the best covers Kirby created for the run. If the reaction from our staff is any indication, this one will be getting a ton of bidder attention! It's in ink and graphite with white paint on several combined pieces of Bristol board, with an approximate image area of 10" x 15", and in Good condition.
