Description

Crockett Johnson and Jack Morley Barnaby Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 1-8-46 (Field Publications/PM, 1946). Much like George Herriman's Krazy Kat, Barnaby was a favored comic strip of many who normally would never read the newspaper "funny pages." It was syndicated in less than 65 papers (as opposed to a strip like Blondie, that ran in as many as 850 papers during this same time period), but it left a lasting impact on comic fans. Initially written and drawn by Crockett Johnson, the strip ran some ten years, from April 20, 1942 until February 2, 1952, by which time it had been taken over by other writers and artists. In 1946, as Johnson begin to concentrate on children's books, art chores fell to his neighbor Jack Morley, who also began to co-write the feature with Ted Ferro. Regardless of who actually did the art, this is still a fantastic example of a wonderful strip. The art is in ink on paper with pasted-on photo type, with an image area of 19.5" x 5", matted to an overall 24" x 8". In Very Good condition. Also included are original hardcover copies of the first two Barnaby books published by Henry Holt and Blue Ribbon Press (both quite collectible in their own right).
