Description
Jim Aparo The Brave and the Bold #138 Batman and Mister Miracle "Mile High Tombstone!" Complete 17-Page Story Original Art (DC, 1977). Offered here is the complete 17-page story "Mile High Tombstone!" featuring Batman and Mister Miracle teaming up to take down the flamboyant French villain Cosimo and rescue their friend, Dr. Steve Lang. Jim Aparo expertly renders their adventure, filling each page with rich detail and sharp visual storytelling. As a bonus, nestled in the middle of this set lies a fascinating glimpse into a subtle but significant production change made to stay true to Batman's character and legacy. In the second panel of Story Page 12, Batman was originally drawn holding the gun he had taken from Cosimo. However, DC likely didn't want their famously firearm-averse Caped Crusader brandishing a weapon, so the artwork was altered. Whiteout was applied to obscure the gun (still faintly visible when held to light from the reverse) and Batman was redrawn with finger guns instead -- his index finger extended in a way that creatively preserves the shape of the gun while removing the weapon. A printout of the original, unaltered panel is included and taped to the back of the page.Need something to complete the package? The original cover art for this issue is also available in this Auction. The pages are rendered in ink and screentone over graphite on Bristol board with image areas of 10" x 15". The boards are lightly toned, with stripped-in text corrections, stat text corrections with adhesive discoloration, whiteout corrections, production notes in blue, adhesive-stained tape in the margins, small stains, corner creasing, and handling wear. Page 1 features stat paste-ups for the character logos, colorist credit, and indicia. Story Page 3 is missing a stat text paste-up in the fourth panel, and the final panel of Story Page 17 is a stripped-in stat with character logo paste-ups. In Very Good condition.
