Description
Graham Ingels Vault of Horror #22 "The Monster in the Ice!" Story Page 1 Original Art (EC, 1951). The Old Witch stirs up a story hot enough to thaw "The Monster in the Ice!" in this wickedly inviting opener by "Ghastly" Graham Ingels. It's a page that makes you shiver twice -- once from the Witch's ghastly grin, the other from the Arctic chill creeping in from the tale she's about to ladle out. We meet geologists Herbert Campbell and Gerald Dawson, a pair who pay no heed to their native guide Lomo's warning about a "monster in the ice," and ultimately pay with their lives. The Al Feldstein and Bill Gaines tale is a wicked cocktail of inspirations, tipping its hat to the 1951 sci-fi horror classic The Thing from Another World and Frankenstein. And the story knows it, with characters explicitly noting how eerily their situation mirrors Mary Shelley's Gothic nightmare. That alone should have set their alarm bells ringing. No one rendered the Old Witch with more delicious menace than Ingels, and this cauldron-side classic positively drips with EC nostalgia. It's a page whose full impact was softened in print, but truly rewards a closer, in-person look.Created in twice-up scale in ink and white paint over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 13.5" x 18". Slight toning, with minor staining, smudging/soiling, glue residue staining, whiteout corrections, stat logo and title paste-ups with some tape, staple in top margin, scraping effects, marginal production notes and stamps, and light handling wear. Signed by Ingels as "Ghastly" in the lower left image area. In Very Good condition.
