Description

John Romita Sr. and Mike Esposito The Amazing Spider-Man #41 Rhino First Appearance Cover Original Art (Marvel, 1966). The Rhino charges into the Marvel Universe on this bold cover by Romita Sr.! He would quickly join the ranks of Marvel's bad guys from the height of Marvel's creative boom. And for those keeping score, yes... he is yet another animal-themed enemy of Spider-Man. (Petey doesn't need a prison for his rogues gallery, he needs a zoo!) A version of rampaging Rhino did turn up in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 movie, so he has some big-screen credit also. Adding to the importance of this Silver Age twice-up gem is the fact that it's only Romita's third ever cover for the title.
Covers of this size and quality are hard to come by, especially when they are also the first appearance for a substantial character. This bad boy was created at twice-up scale in ink over graphite and blue pencil on Bristol board with an image area of 13.25" x 20.25". The logo, corner box, CCA stamp, and trade dressing are all stat paste-ups. The "4" in the issue number is a modern-day replacement. The lower caption box is hand-lettered on the board. Toned, with handling wear, and minor soiling. There is also a half-inch rip in the cover on the Rhino's right leg (above the knee), and a small notch in the lower left marginal edge. Personalized and signed by John Romita Sr. in the top margin. In Very Good condition.
