Description

Joe Simon and Jack Kirby Captain America Comics #5 Splash Page 1 Original Art (Timely/Marvel, 1941). This opening splash page for the story "The Terror That Was Devil's Island" features a captured Cap and Bucky, as well as an unfortunate Yank P.o.W. Pages this early in the formation of what would become the "Marvel Universe" are just simply too rare to categorize, but splash pages are almost unheard of! And remember, as it becomes clear in the story, this was released before the US had officially entered the war. Sadly, that day was not far off, as this book was on the racks in the summer of 1941, and the attack on Pearl Harbor happened just a few months later.
This powerful splash page was created in ink over graphite on illustration board with an image area of 13.25" x 18.5". The board has blue pencil color call-out notations. The "Captain" logo stat is the original paste-up (creased and slightly damaged), and the "America" is a printed replacement paste-up that has discolored. There is whiteout art and text clean-up in the top portion, along with glue residue near the header paste-ups. The board has handling wear, and edge/corner wear, with soft corners. In Very Good condition.
