Description
The Shadow #1 April 1931 (Street & Smith) CGC FR 1.0 Off-white pages. If the October 1912 All-Story is the Action Comics #1 of pulps, then this momentous first issue is pulps' Detective Comics #27! Featuring the first appearance of the Shadow, this first true "hero" pulp is far rarer than either of those comics. Bookery's lists issues from the first year of the title as "quite scarce" and this issue specifically as "rare", but both of those are quite the understatement. We've offered only a handful of copies of this issue previously, and this is only the third we've ever offered without trimming or restoration. This copy has fantastic eye appeal for the grade, with a complete image of the iconic front cover complimented by the bright red mysterious back cover and off-white pages. While pulps had featured recurring heroic characters in the 1910s and 20s, like Tarzan and Zorro, none headlined their own title. In July 1930, Street & Smith introduced a radio narrator known as "The Shadow" to promote their line of detective pulps, and the character quickly became a hit. Shortly thereafter, the publisher assigned Walter Gibson (under the pseudonym Maxwell Grant) to create the character for a pulp series. Gibson would go on to write lead stories in over 100 issues for the best-selling title. The character has been adapted and revived countless times in the intervening years across every medium imaginable, and remains synonymous with pulps.
Pulp collecting has shifted radically in recent months because of CGC's grading and certification driving new collectors to the hobby, but this timeless classic has remained one of the most desirable pulps for nearly a century. The issue looks wonderfully preserved in its CGC holder, and would make an excellent centerpiece to any pulp or comic collection.
Guide values rarely live up to current market prices, and this is a clear example of that. While Bookery's lists a GD copy for a meager $3,300, we last sold a raw GD+ in July 2023 for over $40,000. Who knows what this may sell for? "The Shadow knows!" Bookery's Guide to Pulps Second Edition GD value = $3,300. CGC census 10/24: 1 in 1.0, 1 higher.
