Description

Detective Comics #31 (DC, 1939) CGC GD/VG 3.0 Off-white pages. This is an eye-catching copy of the third-most valuable Batman book, outranked by Detective Comics #27 and Batman #1, and the second-most valuable issue of the title. It's also fairly rare, of course, especially in high grades or unaltered condition; of the 118 copies currently listed on the CGC census, 73 have Universal grades, 10 of which are graded FN- 5.5 or better.
As for the contents, this issue has a lot going on: it features the first appearances of the Batplane, the Batarang, and Bruce Wayne's (then) fiancée, Julie Madison, plus the debut of Batman's first super-powered foe: the Monk. Bob Kane's brooding, atmospheric cover is a classic that has been referenced and paid homage to many times over the years. Lastly, it also contains a Slam Bradley story by Superman's co-creators, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. This key Bat-book is currently #9 on Overstreet's list of Top 100 Golden Age Comics. Overstreet 2024 GD 2.0 value = $48,800; VG 4.0 value = $97,600. CGC census 1/26: 6 in 3.0, 27 higher.
From the James Baxter Collection.
