Description

Frank Frazetta Death Dealer VI Painting Original Art (1990). When you hear the name "Frank Frazetta", you instantly think of rich paintings of barbarians in glorious combat, in a fantasy setting. And the market has repeatedly proven that to be some of his most popular work. But why is his fan-base so solid? Because of his immense talent, skill, and the fact that he has built several fan groups in a variety of formats. From his more humble beginnings, drawing illustrations for text stories in the middle of "funny animal" comic books in the 1940s, to more adult themes in comics, then to paintings used for paperback covers, popular posters, and famously popular rock album covers, Frazetta has ultimately and deservedly been recognized by the serious fine art community.

Frazetta paintings have been setting records at auction, with 12 paintings having realized more than $300,000 each in our auctions -- and five of those (this one included) have sold for over One Million Dollars each! The record holder right now is Dark Kingdom, which sold in 2023 for $6,000,000.00. Of Heritage's 12 top-selling original art pieces in our Comics & Comic Art auction history, seven are by Frazetta... more than half of them. In fact, Robert Crumb is the only other artist to even have two pieces in the Top 12.

If you could have just one of his paintings, chances are you would think of one featuring the Death Dealer. The original just might be the most renowned fantasy painting of all, but there are five other paintings featuring the same axe-wielding barbarian with the burning eyes, and we're pleased to offer Death Dealer VI. In true barbarian fashion, it features him fighting a giant serpent. It was eventually used, appropriately enough, as the cover for Death Dealer #6 published by Image Comics in 2008.

The large and impressive work was fashioned in oil on masonite, signed and dated in the lower right of the 18" x 30" image area, and open-front framed to 23.5" x 35.5".

Condition report: Under UV exam, there appears to be a small ¾ inch area of inpaint in the upper left quadrant, not extending into the main composition. Small pinpoint indentations to the board with accompanying inpaint in the upper right corner. Small quarter-inch scratch with accompanying loss in the lower left corner. A few minor abrasions along the lower edge, mostly notable under close inspection. Uneven varnish. Overall, the condition is typical of Frazetta originals we have seen, and this spectacular piece is in Very Good condition.
