Description

SpongeBob SquarePants "Ripped Pants" SpongeBob Production Cel Setup with Master Background (Nickelodeon, 1999). "Am I the biggest loser on the beach?!" "No, I'm the biggest loser on the beach. They buried me in the sand and forgot me." An overlooked outcast begins to emerge from the sand beneath SpongeBob's feet in this original Master setup from Episode 2's "Ripped Pants" of his titular Nicktoon SpongeBob SquarePants. With 15 seasons and counting, this wildly-popular Nickelodeon original was created by marine science teacher Stephen Hillenburg and featured traditional cel animation only in the first season. "Ripped Pants" debuted on July 17, 1999 and saw SpongeBob try to make the best of a bad situation at the beach but in classic fashion takes things a bit too far. After faking his drowning goes poorly, SpongeBob completely rips off his pants before being joined by other seaside misfits with Frank the whale emerging from the sand near the 8:54 timestamp of the segment when viewed online; the changing tent background is seen slightly earlier near 7:29, though the layer with the doorflap seen onscreen is not included. SpongeBob has been hand-painted with an impressive amount hand-inked detail to full-figure standing at 1.5" within the full image area of 4" x 4.5" which includes the rising sand and surrounding bubbles on the 12 field cel which is numbered in the lower right with a partially visible timing chart. The Master background is hand-painted in gouache on background board measuring approximately 13.25" x 10.5" overall with production codes along the lower edge. Background artists for Episode 2 include Andy 'Spike' Clark and Calvin G. Liang. With typical handling and edge wear including minor linework wear and a few paint corrections, overall this embarrassed oddball is in Very Good condition.
