Description

Dudley Do-Right "Sawmill" Outdoor Scene Production Cel (Jay Ward, 1959). Snidely Whiplash's sawmill sat atop this tiny mountain plateau in the Season 2 episode "Sawmill," as seen in this original hand-painted production background. The artists working on Jay Ward cartoons circa 1959-63 kept their backgrounds highly stylized, and that's part of their charm. Original production backgrounds like this original 12 field gouache on board piece are typical of the Cartoon Modern look established by UPA and expanded on by Ward, Hanna-Barbera, and other studios in the swinging sixties. The backgrounds were painted by Sam Clayberger, Walt Peregoy, Jack Heiter, Bob McIntosh, Gloria Wood, Bob Inman, and others. This background will work with cels originally purchased from the Dudley Do-Right Emporium located at 8200 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood (open from 1971 to 2005). It's in Very Good condition with minor handling and edge wear.
