Description
Dime Mystery Magazine #11 October 1933 (Popular) CGC VF 8.0 Off-white to white pages. This key issue is widely considered the first "weird menace" pulp. This marked a major shift from earlier examples of pulp horror and dark fantasy and would come to define both Dime Mystery and Dime Detective. Walter Baumhofer's cover is an immediate departure from earlier issues of this title, which all featured a book-cover motif and more static imagery. The"weird menace" genre (also known as "shudder" pulps) represented a melding of the hard-boiled detective fiction of the 1920s, Gothic melodrama, and the French Grand Guignol. The "weird menace" genre combined supernatural terrors, bodily horrors, sensationalism, exploitation, and absurd violence often to shocking effects. Many of the shudder pulps remain both shocking and hilarious nearly 90 years later, and are among the most sought-after pulps. Beloved titles like Terror Tales and Horror Stories (both also from Popular) would not exist without this, and this is an excellent example of a key pulp. Bookery's Guide to Pulps Second Edition 2020 VF 8.0 value = $675. CGC census 10/25: 1 in 8.0, none higher. NOTE: The newly released Bookery's Guide to Pulps: Revised Third Edition 2025 VF 8.0 value for this issue is $5,000.
