Black Mask #31 October 1922 (Pro-Distribution) CGC VG+ 4.5 Off-white to white pages. Carroll John Daly makes his first appearance in Black Mask with "Dolly" in this issue. Daly would go on to appear in dozens of issues of Black Mask, and his writing defined both this iconic title and the wider genre of hard-boiled detective fiction. He is generally considered the first writer of hard-boiled detective stories and created the first recurring heroes of the genre. Bookery's notes issues from this era as "especially scarce". CGC notes, "Small amount of dried glue on spine of cover." Bookery's Guide to Pulps Second Edition 2020 VG 4.0 value = $400. CGC census 10/25: 1 in 4.5, none higher.
