Description
Christmas Card Illustrations Original Art with Mock-Ups and Proofs Group of 10 (Samuel Lowe/Buzza-Cardozo, c. 1940s-50s). It wouldn't be the holiday season without the festive tradition of exchanging greeting cards. From the Samuel Lowe Company comes this collection which spotlights several outdoor winter scenes. It includes a stylized cover illustration rendered in monochrome with cut and paste elements on heavyweight artboard measuring 8.25" x 9.5" overall with an image area of 4.75" x 5.75", and two hand-painted mock-ups featuring a snow-covered town with the bifold card measuring 4.5" x 6.5" and the cover-only mock-up slightly smaller at 4.5" x 5.5". These three pieces have been rendered in gouache/watercolor with graphite blocking and notes. Printed pieces include a mock-up with two cover variations featuring candles and measuring 4.5" x 6", two metallic embossed images measuring approximately 4.5" x 3.5", and two proof cards featuring a festive window with a textured element measuring 4.5" x 5.5" each and numbered LOWE 0-216-A and B on the backside. Also included is a published/proof card by early 20th century greeting card company Buzza-Cardozo. George Buzza founded his company in 1907, partnering with Ralph Cardozo in the early 1930s; department stores across the country carried their sought after greeting cards. With handling and edge wear including light staining/smudging and some remaining tape, overall the condition of this lot is Good.From the Samuel Lowe Company Archives.
