Description
S.J. Ray He'll Now Put the Cats Out... Political Comics Panel "Hitler" Inscribed Original Art (Kansas City Star, 1941). Adolf Hitler attempts to seal off the Balkans ("back door to Germany") from anti-Nazi influences in this emphatic commentary. An on-the-spot appraisal of Third Reich futility amid World War II, the cartoon looks in retrospect like a bizarre ancestor of Art Spiegelman's famous graphic novel, Maus, which has become a favorite target of 21st-century Nazi apologists -- with the significant extinction that Ray depicts cats as infiltrating enemies of the Nazi forces, where Spiegelman portrays the Nazis themselves as cats. No accounting for perception, of course. The piece is inscribed to a fan named Henry Gerling. A rich example of Ray's extra-bold ink-brush style, arrayed on a 12" x 15" slab of lightly toned Bristol board. Excellent condition.Auction Info
