Lucile Stewart The Beauty Quest Daily-Format Comic Strip Original Art and Matching Typescript Group of 2 (1930s). A pioneering example of the gradual development of a women-in-comics movement. Author Iris Brown's The Beauty Quest provided a generous showcase for Lucile Stewart's robust yet delicate depictions of career women in various professions. Brown's emphasis upon hygiene as a function of glamour finds an unusual compatibility between feminism and femininity. This undated example is doubly unusual, in that it concentrates upon a woman of Soviet Russia - "boss of a crew of oil drillers" - who transforms herself into a presence as "dainty as any butterfly girl..." The formatting of Brown's accompanying typescript suggests an illustrated chapter from a book-length presentation, well before the coining of the term graphic novel. No publishing pedigree is documented. Ink over graphite on age-toned Bristol board. Image area, 14.75" x 4.5". There is light toning, moderate edge and corner wear, and the transcript is heavily toned. In Very Good condition.Auction Info
