Description

Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers The World Around Us #31 Hunting Issue Page 27 Original Art (Gilberton Publ., 1961). The conventional wisdom holds that Kirby and Ayers, an ideal combination of pencil-and-ink talents, were chained to Marvel Comics until that company's giant-monster books could blossom into a revolutionary line of superhero adventures. In fact, Kirby and Ayers were playing the field as freelancers, accepting any opportunities to stay afloat in a then-depressed market for the comic-book industry. The present selection, a plug for wildlife conservation, is an example of their contributions to Gilberton's various titles, which also included Classics Illustrated. The timing is crucial, here: Later on in 1961, Marvel's premiere of Fantastic Four #1 would herald the transformation of workhorse Kirby into "King of Comics" Kirby, with Ayers remaining a frequent collaborator. Ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 10.5" x 18". Excellent condition.
