Description

John Buscema and Tom Palmer Conan the Barbarian #55 Story Page 18 Original Art (Marvel, 1975). Here is the next-to-last page of editor/author Roy Thomas's epic adventure, "A Shadow on the Land!" -- a grand pairing of Buscema's dynamic pencil compositions with Palmer's emphatic high-contrast inking. In a "Helen of Troy"-styled climax, a royal hostage, Lady Yvonna, puts an end to an armed conflict, simply by refusing to be "a pawn to be moved about their game-board." Conan the Cimmerian plays along with her peaceable gambit. Commander Murilo gets in a sly last word (Panel 8) as the armies disperse. An ironic narrative tone makes the sequence a worthy, surprisingly bloodless variation on the prevailing violent attitude of the Conan series' founding author, Robert E. Howard. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with an image area of 10" x 15". Light toning, with marginal tape residue and small spots of staining. In Very Good condition.
From The Tom Palmer Collection.
