Description

Chic Young - Blondie and Dagwood Custom Golf Illustration Original Art (c. 1940s-50s). A classic Dagwood Bumstead slugfest, here -- and one never seen in Young's famous comic strip, Blondie. This piece hung for many years in the clubhouse of the Amateur Golfers of Orlando, Fla., where Young often visited from his home in New York State before resettling off coastal Florida around 1950. Not many readers nowadays associate Young with the sport, but he had a long history as an enthusiast, including a 1930s stretch when he produced a weekly golf cartoon, The Family Foursome, as a companion-feature to the Sunday Blondie. The dialogue here (at upper right) refers to two ranking members of the Orlando club. Ink and watercolors over graphite on Bristol board mounted to a support board. Image area, 14" square. Age-toned uniformly, with color-fading from prolonged exposure to ambient room light. Very Good condition.
