Description
Al Smith (as Bud Fisher) Mutt and Jeff Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 7-19-30 (H.C. Fisher, 1930). Goofball Augustus Mutt daydreams of becoming a great sportsman. He proposes to challenge Tommy Lipton in the yachtsman arena. (Sir Thomas Lipton, owner of the Lipton Tea brand, was a yachting enthusiast, known as the most persistent challenger in the America's Cup tournament.) Mutt's line, "Tommy Lipton never got close enough to hurt a man," refers to Lipton's America's Cup losses, occurring as late as 1930, a year before his death at 83. The art, here, is the work of dedicated assistant Al Smith, who took on Mutt and Jeff by default during the early Depression period -- founding artist Fisher had lost interest, except in the revenues. Smith remained with the strip for nearly 50 years, though denied a byline until the mid-1950s. Ink on Bristol board, with an image area measuring 29" x 8.5". The art is in Very Good condition, with edge toning and a glue-stained word-balloon patch at Panel 4.Auction Info
