Description

E. C. Segar Sappo Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 3-30-30 (King Features Syndicate, 1930). Just over a year after Elzie Segar had introduced his game-changing character, Popeye the Sailor, to the Thimble Theatre comic strip, the artist persisted with the companion feature, Sappo -- thematically unrelated, but consistent with Segar's style of knockabout slapstick and goofy absurdities. Although each such gag was self-contained, the episodes followed continuing story-arcs about the misadventures of householders John and Myrtle Sappo and their circle of eccentrics. The focus here is on a "temperamental nut artist," Mr. Splat, who has become a boarder. Myrtle is ready to give him the bum's rush, until Sappo sells one of his paintings at a profit. Mr. Splat remains as splattery as ever. This character resembles a Thimble Theatre character, the ill-tempered George W. Geezil. Ink over graphite on toned Bristol board, with an image area of 20.5" x 6.5". A conspicuous moisture stain appears in the upper tier. Otherwise in Very Good condition.
