Description
John Spranger The Saint Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 5-5 (New York Herald Tribune, 1950s). A jungle setting dominates this tense episode involving a dangerous assignment for Leslie Charteris' heroic Simon "the Saint" Templar. Spranger's lush, high-contrast brushwork is ideally suited to the illusion of density and vastness. Spranger's art resembles the style of the first Saint cartoonist, Mike Roy. A distinguishing touch is that Spranger (beginning in 1951) altered the Saint's aspect by adding a beard-and-moustache adornment. Date undocumented other than the month-and-day reference, as a consequence of a missing copyright bug. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Scattered adhesive residue, with handling wear. Otherwise, in Very Good condition.Auction Info
