Sam Fair The Dandy Comic #137 Weekly Comic Strip "Addie and Hermy, the Nasty Nazis" Original Art and Reading Copy Group of 2 (Thomson House of London, 1940). Leave it to a working-class cartoonist in war-besieged England to give the razz to Adolf Hitler. This choice selection appeared in print mere months before the Nazis' Blitzkreig attacks upon the U.K., and scarcely two years after the British Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain, had proved himself a naive fool in his attempts to appease the dictator. Fair, one of the most prolific artists of the British comics weeklies, usually dealt in knockabout, or slapstick, comedy. Here, Fair combines that traditional idiom with satire, portraying Hitler and Hermann Goering as horserace cheats who receive an ironic comeuppance -- at the expense of their horse. (In an international context, Fair's cartoon predates by half a year the United States' first emphatic comic-book attack on Hitler, in the Joe Simon-Jack Kirby cover design for Captain America Comics #1.) The present selection is drawn in an American comic-book format, without the wordy prose captions that one associates with Dandy-style cartoon stories. Where The Dandy usually gave the full-page display treatment to its comics, this one was reduced to a two-column slot near the back of the magazine. A reading copy of the issue, intact with age-toned paper, is included. The art comprises ink over graphite on Bristol board, with an image area of 9.5" x 9".
