Carl Barks Luck of the North Donald Duck Painting Preliminary Original Art (1973). This sketch captures the exact core elements of Carl Barks' classic cover to Four Color #256, where Donald and Huey, Dewey, and Louie get an unexpected "lift" in their kayak from a very unhappy polar bear. In the story, Donald -- fed up with cousin Gladstone Gander's impossible luck -- cons him into chasing a bogus uranium-mine map to Alaska, then follows with the nephews, only to collide head-on with brutal Arctic conditions. Barks appears to have referenced his original cover design here, scaling the main elements in preparation for his 1973 painting. The only painted version of Luck of the North he ever produced, the finished masterwork was reproduced on Page 169 (Color Plate 49) of The Fine Art of Walt Disney's Donald Duck (1981). Rendered in colored pencil on both sides of onion skin with an approximate image area of 14.25" x 10.75". Please note the artwork appears lighter in person. The sheet exhibits toning, with significant tearing through the image areas and along the edges, including a 7" tear and a 6.5" tear, as well as significant creasing, areas of discoloration at the bottom, pinholes, and handling wear. Signed by Carl Barks in the lower right and in Fair condition.
