Description

Eric Stanton Tin Hats Wartime Daily Comic Strip Panel dated 10-4-44 Original Art (Bell Syndicate, 1944). Comic-strip scholar Ger Apeldoorn cinched the connection in 2013 between Tin Hats, a morale-booster military feature, and Stanton's notorious bondage cartoons of the midcentury. The signature matches between the far-removed genres, with the likeness complicated by the artist's extreme youth in the 1940s: Tin Hats' comparative sophistication invites consideration of Stanton as a teenage prodigy. In terms of subject-matter, Tin Hats bears a greater kinship to the World War II documentary-like cartoons of Bill Mauldin, and to Milton Caniff's sustained show of humorous respect for foot-soldiers in Male Call. This specimen emphasizes the Women's Army Corps, with look-alike WACs at odds because "they haven't spoken to each other since 1938, when one copied the other's dress!" Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 5.75" x 7". Lightly toned and in Very Good condition, considering a conspicuous adhesive stain at lower edge.
