Description
Gus Mager In Jungle Land Sunday Comic Strip Fragments Original Art Group of 2 (c. 1900). These surviving, deteriorated fragments represent Mager's earliest mass-market breakthrough, In Jungle Land (alias Jungle Society) -- pre-dating his famous parodies of the Sherlock Holmes canon, Sherlocko the Monk and Hawkshaw the Detective. The sequence depicts a kingly lion's flirtation with a comely lioness, to the annoyance of the Queen Lioness. Here is a classic precursor of the Funny Animals school of comics. Ink and watercolor tinting over graphite on age-ravaged and brittle Bristol board, with an approximate image area (each) of 16" x 3.75". A third fragment contains only text captions. The condition is Poor, with ragged edges and general toning. From the Al Williamson Collection.
