Description

Tom Doerer Joe Palooka #35 Complete 1-Page Story "Sportopics" Original Art (Magazine Management, 1949). Joe Palooka, a comic-book spinoff of Ham Fisher's prizefighting strip, also touched on sporting events outside the boxing ring. This Doerer piece depicts the N.Y. Yankees' Tommy Henrich, among other highlights of outfield action. The absence of a diligent editor is evident in the hand-lettered text, which includes two conspicuous misspellings -- a humanizing touch. Ink and white-paint lettering over graphite on Bristol board, with an image area of 12" x 18". Excellent condition, barring light erosion in the painted lettering (lower left panel).
