Description
The Hunchback of Notre Dame Quasimodo and Esmeralda Story Concept/Color Key Original Art Group of 4 (Walt Disney, 1996). "Sanctuary!!" The pronounced emotional contrast between Quasimodo's character introduction and his climatic rescue of Esmeralda is on full display throughout this incredible group of 4 original story art/color key paintings from Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame. This film released in June 1996 to generally positive reviews despite its family-friendly changes from Victor Hugo's original 1831 novel. These 4 highly detailed miniature paintings are concept works that would have been used to establish color palette and theme for their respective scenes; Quasi's character introduction with the baby bird seen near the 6:48 mark just after the title sequence, scaling down the side of the cathedral carrying Esmeralda and her goat Djali under the cover of nightfall spotted near the 42:57 mark, and finally Quasimodo's thrilling rescue of the selfless Romani dancer during the film's suspenseful climax beginning near the 1:14:04 mark. Each painting has been rendered in gouache on trimmed Bristol board. Quasi's character debut with the baby bird has an image area of 4" x 2.75" on a 4.25" x 3.25" board with a black masking tape border. The twilight departure from the eaves of Notre Dame has an image area of 3.25" x 6" on a 4.75" x 7.5" board also with black masking tape. The bell-ringer's call for sanctuary outside the rose window has an image area of 3.25" x 2.5" on a 3.75" x 3" tape-edged board, while his lament over Esmeralda's trauma has an image area of 2.5" x 5" on a 4" x 6.25" untaped board. With typical handling and edge wear including minor surface wear/debris and remaining tape, overall this rare and unique group of story art/color key paintings is in Very Good condition.Auction Info
