Description

C.D. Batchelor Sailor atop Cannon Barrel Original Art (New York Daily News Co., 1940s). Lest he be remembered as the grimmest of the World War II editorialists, Pulitzer Medalist Batchelor crafts here a lighthearted tribute to the U.S. Navy. (Immense, too.) Not to suggest that a battery of shipboard cannons isn't grim, in and of itself -- but the tone is upbeat, suggesting a period around the close of the war. The signature and the personalized inscription appear intrinsic to the artwork, rather than an after-the-fact addition. Ink and graduated crayon-shading over blue pencil, on heavy-texture watercolor stock. (A test-sketch appears on the reverse.) Image area, 21.5" x 30". Natural smudging and age-toning. Excellent condition.
