Description

Middle and East Sepik River 29'' - 35'' Hand-Carved Wood Canoe Prow, Canoe Shield, and Ceremonial House Carving (c. 1970s). Marc Davis, a Disney Legend and one of Walt's Nine Old Men, once remarked that he believed that his first exposure to Oceanic Art was in the late 1930s to early 1940s, later recognizing the styles he "most often admired came from New Guinea." He and his wife Alice Estes Davis built quite the collection of Pacific art on their visits in 1975 and 1978. The trio of hand-carved wood items in this lot, crafted for sale, are only a few of the many that were displayed in their home. The lot includes a carved cockatoo canoe prow with one of Marc's original labels indicating it was created by an artisan in Kambot village located along the Keram River. Also included is a beautiful hand-painted canoe shield for a boat, crafted by a tribal artisan in Tambanum village according to Marc's original label, the largest on the river in the East Sepik region. These shields were placed at the front of canoes during ceremonies as well as protection against oncoming spears during battle. Lastly is an amazing carving similar to those sometimes used at topmost point or on a lintel of a men's ceremonial house. These are in the center of the village and important to the spiritual and ritual rites of men in the village. This carving has a figure in the center and a hornbill at the tip that symbolizes strength. The pieces measure about 10.25'' x 29'' x 7'', 14.5'' x 30.5'' x 5'', and 15.75'' x 35'' x 11''. They are in overall Fair condition with expected handling and wear like age-related oxidation of the wood, natural imperfections, surface debris/wear from display and use, cracks, and some scratching/chipping.
