Description

East Sepik River 32'' - 48'' Hand-Carved and Hand-Painted Wooden Gable Mask and Mask Garra (c. 1970s). From the East Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea, we present an amazing gable mask and mask garra (or mask hook) from the collection of Disney Legend and one of Walt's Nine Old Men Marc Davis (1913 - 2000) and his wife Disney Legend Alice Estes Davis (1929 - 2022). Both already enthusiasts of Pacific art when they met, Marc and Alice vastly expanded their personal collection during their trips to Papua New Guinea in 1975 and again in 1978. Both of the hand-carved and hand-painted items include Marc's original labels. The first is noted to be a gable mask from the Kuvanmas Lake region in the East Sepik. These masks were carved with faces to represent ancestors or spirits and were placed on gables of men's Spirit Houses ((also called haus tambaran) to attract powerful spirits or offer protection. These houses are at the center of villages and are very important for spiritual and ritual practices by the men of the village. This mask is a testament to the craftsmanship of these masks with inlaid shells and seeds, tusks, and natural fibers as well as beautiful hand-painted and carved details. The second item is a mask hook/mask garra noted by Marc to feature the Huntstein mountain god. The concentric hook mask garras, depending on how they were stylized, represented catfish and the initiation of young men or hornbills and senior or elder men of the village. When the hooks weren't being used, they were stored in the men's Spirit house. The pair measure about 20'' x 32'' x 6 and 7.25'' x 48'' x 5.5''. With expected handling and wear including age-related oxidation of the wood, natural imperfections, surface debris/wear from display and use, cracks, and some scratches/chipping, the group is in Fair condition. Due to size and/or weight, special shipping arrangements may apply.
