Description
Superman "Jungle Drums" Lois Lane, Nazi Soldiers, and Tribesmen Storyboard Pair (Famous Studios, 1943). "Agh, American stubbornness! I give you just ten minutes to remember what you did with those papers!" Lois Lane's plane has been shot down over the African jungle leading to her capture at the hands of Nazi troops in this pair of original storyboards for the Fleischer/Famous Superman short Jungle Drums. These storyboards are attributed to scenic artist Robert Little (1902 - 1994) who is known for his work under both Fleischer and later Famous studios, contributing to story as well as background art for the seventeen-short theatrical Superman series that spanned the two studios. Premiering on March 26, 1943, Jungle Drums saw Lois Lane captured by Nazis disguised as African tribesmen after her plane is downed over the dense jungle. But when all hope seems lost, Superman arrives to save Lane from certain fiery doom. Lane, captured and bound, can be spotted beginning near the 3:38 mark and the tribesmen are seen with their spears near the 6:40 mark as Superman emerges from the flames carrying Lane to safety. Both storyboards have been rendered in gouache and colored pencil on trimmed animation paper and matted under clear acetate. Lane's storyboard has an image area of 5.75" x 4" with her character's seated height at 1.75" surrounded by ominous silhouetted figures; the tribesmen's storyboard has a slightly larger image area of 6" x 4.5" with the central figure standing approximately 3" tall. Lane's mat has an overall size of 14.75" x 13" with an aperture of 6.75" x 5" while the tribesmen's mat measures 14.75" x 14" with an aperture of 6.75" x 6" and includes a hand-written inscription (incorrectly attributing it to Fleischer). With typical handling and edge wear including some minor surface wear primarily to the lower right of Lane's board, overall this rare pair of early Superman storyboards is in Very Good condition.More information about Famous Studios Artist.
