Description
Pluto Ceramic Figurine by Brayton Laguna (Walt Disney, c. 1938-40). Ready to pounce and play, Disney's favorite pooch Pluto is offered as a rare vintage ceramic figurine created by the first company licensed to produce full color Disney character figurines, Brayton Laguna in Laguna Beach. Brayton Laguna's focus was primarily on artware and hand-decorated figurines, and at their highest capacity in the 1940s Brayton employed an impressive 150 artisans and potters. Brayton pioneered Southern California ceramics production and heavily contributed to trends in popularity, yet it only produced its select line of Disney character figurines for seventeen months before the contract expired. Uniquely, the Disney Studio model department produced most, if not all, of the Disney molds for Brayton, and many of the feature film characters, such as the Pinocchio line, were created using the original film maquettes as reference. The hand-painted and glazed pup is featured in a sprightly pose with a length of 6" and a height of 3.25". This model can be seen on page 19 of Disneyana Collectors Guide to California Pottery covering years 1938-1960 published by Park Place Press. This specific figure has a paint error where Pluto's left ear was incorrectly left tan instead of painted black, making it wholly unique. The bottom of the figure shows an incised 7 near the left paw, likely for a mold number. With handling wear including a small crack in the glazing on the inside of his right paw/wrist, wear on the bottom, and light glazing wear to the tip of his nose.
