Description
Donald Duck Ceramic Figurine by Brayton Laguna (Walt Disney, c. 1938-40). Looking downright cantankerous it's Disney's favorite temperamental waterfowl, Donald Duck offered as a vintage ceramic figurine created by the first company licensed to produce full color Disney character figurines, Brayton Laguna in Laguna Beach. Brayton Laguna's focus was primarily on artware and hand-decorated figurines, and at their highest capacity in the 1940s Brayton employed 150 artisans, and potters. Despite pioneering Southern California ceramics production and heavily contributing to trends in popularity, Brayton Laguna only produced their select line of Disney character figurines for seventeen months before their contract expired. Uniquely, the Disney Studio model department produced most, if not all, of the Disney molds for Brayton, and many of the feature film characters, such as the Pinocchio line, were created using the original film maquettes as reference. This hand-painted and glazed squawking Donald is featured wearing his classic 4-button shirt with his right arm raised and mouth open, measuring approximately 6.25" tall. This model can be seen on page 20 of Disneyana Collectors Guide to California Pottery covering years 1938-1960 published by Park Place Press. With handling wear including some small areas of light crazing, wear on the bottom, and light wear to the glazing on the tip of his tail and the corner of his sailor collar.
