Description

The Lion King Scar and Ed Presentation Cel with Production Background (Walt Disney, 1994). "It's clear from your vacant expressions, the lights are not all on upstairs." The Lion King represents Disney's renaissance at its apex and is the highest grossing hand-drawn animated film in the history of cinema with sales of nearly a billion dollars. It has spawned two direct-to-video feature films (a prequel and a sequel), a Saturday morning cartoon series, a major Broadway touring play, and a live-action film coming out this summer. It's one of the most important movies in the history of Disney animation. On February 11, 1995 a special auction titled "The Art of the Lion King" was held in New York. The sale featured original hand-painted backgrounds from the film. Because there were no production cels used in the making of the film, each background included a special "one of one" presentation cel hand-painted by the Disney Ink and Paint Department using archived drawings thus creating the closest thing to a Key Master setup one can own from this film. This pan setup of the villain Scar conspiring with his lackey hyena Ed was lot #97 in the auction. Together, the exceptionally large characters in full-figure measure 8.5" x 8" and 4" x 9" respectively on an oversize cel with a Disney seal in the lower right. It is over the original gouache and acrylic background painting from the exact scene which appears at the 27:48 mark. The piece is matted and framed under Plexiglas with a mat opening of 27" x 14" in a 37.5" x 25" frame. A certificate of Authenticity is mounted to the back. Condition is Fine. Frame is sold as-is.
