Description

Reynard the Fox Character Concept/Storyboard Drawing Group of 2 (Walt Disney, c. 1956). Astonishingly rare, presented are two original character concept/storyboard drawings of Reynard the Fox, created for a Disney cartoon based on the European fables that was ultimately never made... but would be the inspiration for the celebrated Walt Disney classic Robin Hood. Storyboarded by Disney Legend Ken Anderson (1909 - 1993) in 1956, the artist tried to revive the Reynard the Fox project, an idea that had been pushed around the studio by story artists Bianca Majolie, Dorothy Ann Banks, Otto Englander and Joe Grant since as early as 1938. Reluctant to abandon the idea, Anderson would later tell the story of Robin Hood using the innovative motif of anthropomorphic animals, inspired by Reynard the Fox. The combination of anthropomorphism with the story of Robin Hood resulted in an iconic and unique take on the legendary hero's folktale mythos. A marvelous find, similar images to these drawings can be seen on pages 34 and 35 of the book They Drew as the Pleased: The Hidden Art of Disney's Early Renaissance by Didier Ghez. These amazing drawings are rendered in conté on sketch paper, and they are matted with window sizes of 4.75" x 4.75" and 7" x 5.25". The overall mat sizes are 10" x 10" and 12.5" x 10.5" respectively. Of importance that can't be overstated, these rare drawings from an abandoned project would ultimately be the inspiration for the beloved masterpiece Robin Hood! The drawings show minor handling and age-related toning with pinholes near corners and edges, and the condition of each is Very Good.
