Description

Camouflage Pan-Sized Production Background Group of 3 (FMPU, 1944). "Camouflage is nothing new; it's old as nature. In fact, nearly everything in nature uses some form of camouflage to conceal it from its enemies." We have in this lot an extraordinary set of two wonderful hand-painted production backgrounds from the animated short by the Army Air Forces First Motion Picture Unit Camouflage, including the one we see in its very first scene! Directed by the Disney Legend Frank Thomas (1912 - 2004), this short was produced as training material for the U.S. Military, featuring a chameleon teaching the basics of camouflage. The background that appears as the animation starts shows a pleasant forest and measures 40" x 10", while the other two backgrounds show clouds measuring 40" x 10.5" and 26" x 10.5", all done in gouache on board, created for a bombing run scene in the training films. These three pan-backgrounds come rolled and show handling and edge wear from production. The shortest background exhibits age-related brittleness and breakage with its left edge torn with various tears on the other edges, presenting Poor condition. The other two backgrounds are in Good condition, showing pinholes on the corners and top edges.
