Description

Private Snafu Hand-Drawn Model Sheet Drawing Pair (Warner Brothers, c. 1943-45). "Coming!! Private Snafu, he's the goofiest soldier in the U.S. Army!" From the personal archive of and attributed to Disney Legend Ken O'Connor (1908 - 1998), comes this rare pair of hand-drawn model sheets featuring the bumbling WWII Army Private, Snafu. During the War years, O'Connor worked both at the Disney studio as well as alongside other prominent Hollywood animators from various studios with Frank Capra on films for the First Motion Picture Unit (aka 18th AAF Base Unit) which included the Private Snafu series. The main goal of this series was to help newly enlisted men with weak literacy skills learn the ins and outs of proper military protocols. When Leon Schlesinger significantly underbid Disney for the Army's animation contract, Warner Bros. Cartoons would go on to produce 28 Snafu shorts, three of which were unreleased. A fan-favorite among soldiers, Snafu was conceived of by Capra and designed by Art Heinemann, later known for his iconic redesign of Woody Woodpecker. Adding to Snafu's historical significance, the majority of his shorts were written or co-written by none other than Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel. This phenomenal pair of hand-drawn model sheets features the Private wearing his combat helmet rather than his more frequently seen garrison cap, and have both been loosely rendered in graphite on sheets of 12 field 2-peghole animation paper. One sheet features 3 full-figured models ranging from 4.5" to 5" tall accompanied by 6 expression/turn-around head models measuring from 1.5" to 2" tall with a wealth of model notes in the margins. The remaining sheet features a single full-figured 4.75" tall model with what an image appears to carrying case for a handgun/pistol. Both sheets bear a Signal Corps Animation Department official stamp. With typical handling and edge wear including faint age-related toning, pinholes, and minor surface stains including oxidation from paperclips, overall this historic model sheet pair is in Very Good condition.
