Description
Eyvind Earle - Sleeping Beauty Cursed Princess Aurora 13.25" x 6" Concept/Color Key Painting (Walt Disney, 1959). "Not in death, but just in sleep. The fateful prophecy you'll keep. And from the slumber, you shall wake when true love's kiss, the spell shall break." Lying dormant as she awaits a curse-breaking kiss from her true love, Princess Aurora is presented in this gorgeous original concept/color key painting by deft hand of Disney Legend Eyvind Earle (1916 - 2000), who's unique artistic styling remained at the forefront throughout Sleeping Beauty. Color keys like this are effectively miniature paintings used to explore and establish color palette and theme for a particular scene. This dreamlike painting displays remarkable detail characteristic of Earle's work on the 1959 feature employing a palette of mystifying cool greys for the castle walls and soft purple bedclothes enveloping the slumbering princess. This outstanding image served to inspire the moment spotted near the 1:02:44 timestamp of the film, with many of the elements remaining in the feature including the overall composition and color palette, the arched windows and ornamental balcony railing, the checker pattern floor, and even the Princess's magnificently draped bedding. This wonderful image has been hand-painted edge-to-edge in gouache with Aurora lying centered on the 13.25" x 6" illustration board and Earle's signature found in the lower right. With typical handling and edge wear including corner pinholes and faint surface wear, overall this testament to Earle's memorable contributions on Sleeping Beauty is in Very Good condition.Auction Info
