Description
The Ruff & Reddy Show Ruff and Reddy Title Concept Drawing by Dick Bickenbach (Hanna-Barbera, c. 1957). Here's one of the earliest pieces of Hanna-Barbera concept art you may ever come across! This is an original title concept drawing created by Dick Bickenbach (1907 - 1994) for The Ruff & Reddy Show, likely created before the series debuted. This series was Hanna-Barbera's very first animated TV series, and it was also one of the first cartoons to ever hit the air. The show pioneered the use of limited animation techniques in Western cartoons, a technique that allowed animation to be created more easily and without such great expense. This is part of what allowed television cartoons to really take off. The main characters of this show were a cat named Ruff and a dog named Reddy, voiced by Don Messick and Daws Butler respectively. The characters are depicted here in adorable, large images, in this concept drawing, which was likely created for the end titles of the show. The end titles shown on air feature very similar images of the two characters in very similar poses as this drawing. The piece was created by Dick Bickenbach, one of the artists who helped make Hanna-Barbera successful in its early days. His style immensely influenced the studio and its early productions. The drawing is rendered with graphite and red pencil on animation paper, with the show's title lightly written below the characters' images. Bickenbach has signed his name on the lower right side of the piece. The drawing is matted and framed with Plexiglas, with a matboard aperture of 10.25" x 8.25" and an overall frame size of 22" x 20". The piece is in Very Good condition, with minor handling and edge wear from production use, including minor smudging, and the frame is sold as-is.Auction Info
