Description

Mary Blair - Cinderella Fairy Godmother and Cinderella Concept/Color Key Painting (Walt Disney, 1950). "Sala-gadoola-menchika-boo-la, Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo! Put 'em together and what have you got? Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo!" Created for the iconic "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo" musical number of the Walt Disney animated feature classic Cinderella, this is a wonderful original concept/color key painting by the great Disney Legend Mary Blair (1911 - 1978). This painting features several delightful details: early designs of Cinderella and her Fairy Godmother, three little mice observing the scene, and a signature Mary Blair full moon centered above the image. Blair's use of color contrasts a gloomy atmosphere with bright pops of hopeful, optimistic pinks and oranges. A similar image to this one can be seen on page 87 of Didier Ghez's book They Drew as They Pleased: The Hidden Art of Disney's Mid-Century Era - The 1950s and 1960s. On page 67, Marc Davis is quoted, "[Mary Blair] was the most amazing colorist of all time. I don't think even Matisse could hold a candle to her-- and I mean that very sincerely. She could put colors together and they would just sing." This exemplary piece is masterfully hand-painted in gouache on 10" x 9" illustration board. The board shows minor handling and edge wear with pinholes in the corners, and the condition is Very Good.
