Description

Mary Blair - Alice in Wonderland Alice in White Dress with Tweedle Dee, and Tweedle Dum 6.5" x 5" Concept/Color Key Painting (Walt Disney, 1951). After the large success of Cinderella, Mary Blair (1911-1978) took on Alice in Wonderland. Her first work was reportedly done prior to storyboards and final scripts and relied heavily on illustrations in both of Lewis Carroll's books Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. They featured illustrations by the English artist John Tenniel, and her initial pass based on that style did not please Walt Disney. He instructed her to try again, so she had to totally revise her approach. As a result, art from this early failed attempt has become the stuff of legend and is highly prized by collectors. Offered here is one such example. It is an original Mary Blair concept/Color Key of Alice white dress with the blue trim as she meets Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee. It is hand-painted in gouache on 6.5" x 5" illustration board. A similar example of Alice's white dress can be seen in storybook Walt Disney's Alice in Wonderland, retold by Jon Scieszka. Since there was little reason to hold onto artwork rejected by Walt Disney, little of it escaped the trash bin, making paintings with this design especially rare. It is must-have for any serious collector of rare Mary Blair concepts. The piece shows minor handling and edge wear with pinholes in corners. The condition is Very Good.
