Description

Mary Blair - Three Caballeros El Hornero 8" x 6" Concept/Color Key Painting (Walt Disney, 1944). "The Hornero Bird" is a scrapped animated short that was going to be a segment in The Three Caballeros. The story was about an unusual South American bird called a "hornero" (ovenbird in English) who's nests of mud that resemble clay ovens. While the story was never animated, the original storyboard is available for viewing on YouTube and it begins with a slightly refined image of this painting as the title card. Offered here is an original concept/color key for the opening of this unmade project and it was painted by Mary Blair (1911 - 1978). The 8" x 6" image is rendered in gouache and watercolor on 10" x 7.5" board. Depicted is a book opened to a page featuring the star of the story El Hornero and his clay nest perched on a fence post. Aside from being exceptionally rare, it's a prime example of Mary's transition from the subtle, illustrative concept art that marked her early years at Disney to the bright, modern, and boldly colored artwork that became her signature style. This period began after she took part in Disney's US. Government sponsored goodwill tour of Latin America and contributed heavily to both of the resulting package films Three Caballeros and Saludos Amigos. This exceptional painting by Disney Legend Mary Blair for a film that never made it past the storyboard stage is a real piece of lost Disney history. The 80-year-old one-of-a-kind artwork shows minor handling, toning and pinholes in the corners. Condition is Very Good.
