Mary Blair - Penelope and the 12 Months Original 4'' x 4.25'' Concept Art (Walt Disney, c. 1940s). In the early 1940s Joe Grant and Dick Huemer of the Walt Disney Studios developed a story for a short film of a little girl who traveled through time and met a variety of characters representative of the months of the year. This charming watercolor painting of Penelope followed by a squirrel was created by Mary Blair (1911-1978) in her first work as a character and story designer for Disney, Ms. Blair was deeply involved in development of the film that was eventually shelved and left unfinished. Hand-signed in full by Mary Blair below the image. See The Disney That Never Was (1995) by Charles Solomon for information on this film project and Ms. Blair's involvement. This painting measures 4" x 4.25" on a sheet of 8" x 8" watercolor paper. The painting has light handling and edge wear, mild age-toning along the edges, and three pinholes on the page with two above and one below the painting. In Very Good condition.
