Description

The Flintstones Flintstone Home Concept Art by Ed Benedict (Hanna-Barbera, c. 1959). Ed Benedict didn't just excel at creating characters; he also made beautiful environments. The prolific animation artist gave his style not only to Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble, but also to their houses! This lot is an absolutely historic piece of Flintstones history. Ed Benedict created this drawing of Fred Flintstone's home during the very early stages of the show. He drew this piece for the original pitch presentation to several TV networks done by Joe Barbera, in which Barbera brought concept art, storyboards, and background designs to several major networks in New York, until the concept of an animated Stone Age sitcom was picked up by ABC. This beautiful piece is made even more impressive by the fact that Benedict explained that he did not use references to invent these prehistoric buildings. This background is straight out of the imagination of the immensely-talented Benedict! The drawing features the Flintstone family's Flintmobile (complete with the hole in the back "window"). The drawing is expertly crafted in black pastel on 12 field animation paper. The image is large, filling up nearly the entire sheet of paper. This concept art was displayed at the Norman Rockwell Museum during its 2016-2017 Hanna-Barbera exhibition. This incredible piece from the Flintstones' pre-production network pitch is in Very Good condition, with some handling and edge wear from age and use. The page shows some age-related toning and minor staining, as well as minor creasing on the edges.
