Description
Mighty Mouse VIP Cel and Production Background with Paul Terry Inscribed Mat (Terrytoons, c. 1940s). That famous "Here I come to save the day" heroic mouse shows off his impressive muscles in this original hand-inked, hand-painted cel. This was a gifted cel setup from none other than Terrytoons studio head Paul Terry (1887 - 1971), in a mat inscribed as "With Best Wishes/to JIM WATSON/Paul Terry." According to a penciled note on back of the mat, the cel and matching painted production background were gifted to a couple Mr. Terry met on a cruise; the "Jim" he referred to here was a mere baby at the time, but he held onto the cel, which is being sold by his family. Mighty Mouse strikes a fantastic pose, which has an approximate image size of 3.5" x 4.5". The mat aperture size is 10.5" x 8" in a glass-front frame measuring 16.5" x 14", with a typed sticker on back that reads "This is an original background painting used in one of the Terrytoon Productions of Mighty Mouse." Choice Mighty Mouse cels from the 1940 are rare, as most of the ones we've encountered are from the later television versions produced by Ralph Bakshi; this iconic vintage pose of MM is the best we've seen to date. The cel shows some slight heat-related warping but the paint remains intact. The hand-painted gouache/watercolor barrel background is actually from Swooning the Swooners, a 1945 cartoon riff on the infatuation with Frank Sinatra; you can see this image at the 1:36 timestamp as a swooning girl cat's "burning heart" is doused with a hand-pump fire extinguisher. All frames are sold as-is. Photos are not representative of actual frame condition.
