Description
Gargoyles "Awakening, Part 1" Captain of the Guard Pan Production Cel with Key Master Background and Layout Drawing Group of 4 (Walt Disney, 1994). "Stand fast! We can hold them back!" The Captain of the Guard orders his men to repel the Viking siege long enough for the sun to set, when they can enlist the aid of their powerful gargoyle allies. Seen at the 2:07 mark of the epic premiere episode "Awakening, Part 1" of the animated series Gargoyles, presented is a spectacular hand-painted original pan production cel displayed on its original Key Master background. An exceptionally rare find, this piece captures the very first image of the gargoyles in the series! A highly coveted image, this setup was initially sold in the 6/10/1995 New York auction promoting the series, which premiered on 10/24/1994. Only 42 lots were featured in the sale. The piece is framed under Plexiglas with mat window size of 9.75" x 14.25" and an overall frame size of 19" x 23.5". The background is masterfully rendered in gouache on board, a dramatic low-angle shot featuring the eponymous gargoyles at the top of the castle walls! In addition, this lot includes three original layout drawings for the shot, rendered in graphite and color pencil on two sheets of 12 field animation paper and one sheet of taped 11.5" x 16.5" animation paper. All four pieces bear official Walt Disney Television seals, and the setup is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity. The layout drawings show minor studio handling and edge wear with tape in places, and the setup shows minimal handling, well preserved in the frame. All frames are sold as-is.
