Description
Berserk Guts 9.5" x 12" Preliminary Publicity Harmony Cel Setup by Shichiro Kobayashi (OLM, c. 1997-98). Guts, the Black Swordsman, looks beyond impressive in this absolutely stunning preliminary publicity harmony cel created by Berserk's legendary art director, Shichiro Kobayashi (1932 - 2022). A veteran of the anime industry, Kobayashi started his career as a background artist in 1964, and founded his background production company, Kobayashi Productions, in 1968, eventually becoming one of the industry's most prolific and renowned art directors. Kobayashi's career as art director had him involved with iconic titles such as Ashita no Joe, Nobody's Boy Remi, Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro, Space Adventure Cobra, and Angel's Egg, among many others. This extraordinary portrait of Guts with his Brand of Sacrifice visible on his neck and carrying his sword, the Dragon Slayer, is done with a hand-inked 9.5" x 12" cel and the magnificent Key Master background rendered in gouache and ink on a 9.5" x 12" board showcasing Kobayashi's distinctive style and presenting Kobayashi's partial signature near the bottom left corner. During his interview on the YouTube program Toco Toco, Kobayashi showcases this piece as he talks about the anime series he has been involved in, seen at the 5:07 mark without the linework cel. The final image created from this amazing piece was famously used on Berserk's first home video cover. Pinholes can be seen on the top edge of the background. Minor wear is present on the linework. The cel is taped to the background by the top edge. Overall, the lot is in Very Good condition, presenting minor handling and edge wear.Auction Info
