Description

Grave of the Fireflies Seita and Setsuko Production Cel Setup with Production Background (Studio Ghibli, 1988). After their hometown of Kobe is destroyed by American bombers, Seita and Setsuko attempt to find their mother amidst the chaos. This hand-painted original production cel setup of the characters who nearly fill the frame can be seen at the 12:33 mark of Isao Takahata's emotional animated war tragedy Grave of the Fireflies. This powerful film tells the story of two orphaned siblings and their desperate struggle to survive during the final months of the Second World War. Notoriously regarded as the saddest animated film ever made, Grave of the Fireflies was released on the same bill as Hayao Miyazaki's My Neighbor Totoro in 1988. In her book Hayao Miyazaki: Master of Japanese Animation, Helen McCarthy considered the dual billing "one of the most moving and remarkable double bills ever offered to a cinema audience." Easily provoking tears at a glance, this poignant cel is displayed on an original production background from another series/film. The background is rendered in gouache on board, and the piece measures an overall 14" x 10". Minor handling and edge wear from normal use in production, and the condition of this excellent piece is Very Good.
