Description

Akira Harukiya Jukebox Production Background (Tokyo Movie Shinsha, 1988). Presented is an exciting find for any fan of Katsuhiro Otomo's genre-defining cyberpunk anime film Akira: an original production background from Kaneda's introductory scene! The film's main character can be seen stooping over this neon jukebox at the 2:42 mark of the film, when his righthand man Yamagata reports the location of their bosozoku rivals. This excellent image captures a common metaphor for the political state of Neo Tokyo seen throughout the film: bright, colorful pretense obscures a well-worn, crumbling foundation. Backgrounds of Akira are highly sought-after as masterful works of art in their own right, but they are also notoriously rare. Tokyo Movie Shinsha famously almost discarded many original backgrounds from the film before they were salvaged at the last second by its North American distribution company Streamline Pictures for the cost of shipping. Allegedly, at the Streamline headquarters, they even found that original backgrounds had been used as packing materials. This stunning surviving background is rendered masterfully in gouache on 15" x 10" board. The piece is numbered 76 in the upper right corner, and it shows minor handling and edge wear from normal studio use. The condition is Very Good.
